Shintoism worship kamis for favors. For example, Irani, the rice producer, an important kami to the Japanese. They thank Irani for producing rice, which is an important food in Japan. They may thank them for luck and protection. In many homes in Japan they embody a place that is set aside as a shrine, also called kami-dana (or kami shelf), that flowers and food are offered. Prayers are also said at the kami-dana. Religious objects are placed upon the kami-dana.
