History
Shintoism is an ancient religion starting around 500 B.C.E. Shintoism is named from the Chinese words "Shen Tao". Shen meaning "divine being" and Tao meaning "way", together it means the "Way of the Spirits". Shintoism is the way of the kami in the 8th century C.E. and at least 5 million people still practice it today in Japan. Shintos believe that kami, which are spirits that live in the earth in natural places like animals, stones moutains, rivers, people, and the dead.
